A bathroom with universal design elements doesn't have to be basic. Here's how our MUSE team took our client's request for a modern, organic spa-like space and made a handicap-accessible bathroom that looks like a resort.

When our clients first came to us, they challenged us to create a bathroom perfect for aging in place with the same accessibility as a handicapped bathroom without the look of it.
They requested a bathroom design with a modern-spa vibe with some whimsical elements incorporated into the space and universal design features that will allow them to live in their home for the long haul without sacrificing their quality of life.

THE BEFORE
The original layout had promising features
overshadowed by choppy angles and soffits that diminished the stunning high ceilings and square footage. Flawed and no longer what our clients wanted, we removed the harsh angles and started with a fresh slate for this bathroom remodel.
THE SHOWER

We created a curbless shower, perfect for aging in place. To give a modern look, we chose a beautiful navy hex that went down the shower wall and onto the shower floor and then pixelated onto the bathroom floor for a whimsical element. We dry-laid each blue tile out to select where the tiles would end and how they would connect to the vanity/tub area. For the remaining shower walls, we chose a ceramic tile with a hand-glazed look to match the other organic textures in the space.
THE VANITIES

We wanted this bathroom to make a statement from the moment you walked through the door. So, we moved the vanities to the main bathroom wall and centered the tub between the windows. The custom-built cherry cabinets, stained with caramel color, came with a built-in storage area underneath that made them perfect for this vanity. Sat atop the light marble quartz countertops is a gorgeous stone vessel sink to complement the modern faucet and match the limestone look of
the bathroom floor.

FINAL TOUCHES
The final request from our homeowners
was a space to get ready with plenty of outlets and storage. Through the reconfiguration of the existing linen closet, we were able to create a nook for a built-in vanity closet. In doing so, it made better use of the linen closet and created a storage area.
THE FINAL RESULTS

Through this remodel, we were able to give our clients their dream bathroom that meets the needs of their daily lives with the look and feel of a modern spa. The added aging-in-place features let our homeowners grow old in their home and not worry about functionality.
